Crater-rim summit
A spectacular ridge walk to Socialist Peak at 4,566 m.

Mountains
Mount Meru is a dormant volcano rising above Arusha. The trek starts inside Arusha National Park, so you often see buffalo, giraffes and monkeys on the way up. Higher up, a narrow crater rim leads to Socialist Peak with views across to Kilimanjaro. It is quieter than Kilimanjaro and an excellent acclimatisation climb.
Mount Meru is climbed on the Momella route from Momella Gate on the eastern side of Arusha National Park. Climbers sleep in mountain huts and are accompanied by an armed park ranger because of wildlife on the lower slopes.
4 days
The standard pace, with a night at Saddle Hut before the summit and a full day to descend.
3 days
A faster option for fit, already acclimatised hikers — the summit and descent days are long.
Side trip
An optional short climb near Saddle Hut for views and extra acclimatisation.

Meru is shorter than Kilimanjaro but steep, and summit day is long. Altitude still matters at 4,566 m, and the crater rim is narrow and exposed in places.
You should be comfortable hiking 6–8 hours on steep ground.
A very early start, a steep ridge and a long descent the same day.
Some rocky sections along the crater rim need care, but no climbing gear.
Walk slowly and drink plenty of water to help your body adapt.

The classic hut-to-hut plan. Timings depend on your pace and the weather.

The best conditions are in the dry seasons, June to October and January to February. The long rains from March to May bring wet, slippery trails and cloud.
Main dry season
The most reliable weather, cold nights and clear summit mornings.
Short dry season
Warmer days and good conditions, with occasional showers.
Long rains
Wet, slippery trails and cloud — not recommended for most climbers.
Short rains
Possible with flexible plans; expect afternoon showers.

Huts provide beds and mattresses, but the summit is cold and windy. Pack layers and good boots.
